( a ) See vol. i, p. 166, note " a,*' circa fincm, under " Ashtown," as to this being one of 26 peerages [I.], conferred that year. ( b ) It is said that an Earldoji of Enzie [S.], was cr. 17 April 1599, with tho Marquessate of Huntly [S.], but no such creation is mentioned in the appendix to 'Wood's Douglas," vol. ii, p. 673. If such was the case, it would of course, be still existing with the Marquessate of Huntly [S.] (<=) See the " llarant of Dudley," by H. S. Grazebrook, pp. 21-25. Roger de Someri, br. of the half blood to this Matilda, was heir to their father, aud ancestor of the Suttons, Lords Dudley. (") It is of course not to be supposed that (even) the House of Lords would now hold that a hereditary peerage waB thus constituted. The editor has however followed " Nicolas " and " Courthope, and not displaced Erdington from among the Baronies by Writ. (°) Giles, his s. and h. had pardon (1345), 19 Ed. III., for not receiving Knighthood. He left issue Thomas, whose posterity continued to reside at Erdingtou for several generations. (0 He defended Crom Castle against a large body of the Army of King Jamea II.
