He was 6. before 1208 ; sue. his father, as Earl of Hereford, 1 June 1220, and is said to have been cr. XII. 1361 12 or 6 Humphrey (de Bohun), Earl of Here- to ford, Essex and Northampton, nephew and h., being s. and 1373. h. ofWilliam, Earl of Northampton, next br. to Humphrey, Earl of Hereford and Essex abovenamed. He was ft. 1341 ; sue. his father as Earl of Northampton, 16 Sep. 1360 ; and sue. his cousin as Earl of Hereford and Earl of Essex, 15 Oct. 1361. He s.p.m., 26 Jan. 1372/3, when the Earldom of Essex (as also the Earldoms Hereford and Northampton) became extinct. ad d. I of I XIII, 1374, Thomas (Plantagenet), surnanied " of Woodstock," to yst. s. of King Edward IH., was 6. 7 Jany. 1355, and having m. 1397. in 1374 Eleanor, 1st da. and coheir of Humphrey (de Bohun), Earl of Hereford, Essex, and Northampton, abovenamed, appears to have had the style of EARL OF ESSEX,(t>) tho' of neither of tho other Earldoms. He was or. 15 July 1377, EAHL OF BUCKINGHAM, and on 6 Aug. 1385, DUKE OF GLOUCESTER. He was murdered 8 Sep. 1397, and his only s. and h. Humphrey (who d. num. two years later in 1399) was known (only) as Earl of Buckingham. In 1399, certainly, tho' more probably in 1397 this Earldom of Essex may be considered as ended. Henry Bourchier, s. and h. of Sir William Bourchier, Count of Eu,(°) in Normandy (so cr. 10 June 1419), by Ann, Dow. Countess of Stafford, the only child that had issue of Thomas (Plantaoenet), Duke of Gloucester, Earl of Essex, &c., abovenamed, was ft. 1406 ; sue. his father as Count of Eu, 28 May 1420 ; and about thirteen years later sue. his cousin, 1 July 1433, as LORD BOURCHIER [1342], heiug sum. to Pari, fl July (1435), 13 Hen. VI. to 31 Jany. (1444/5), 23 Hen. VI. by writs( d ) variously directed W Doyle's " Official Baronage." ( b ) His widow is styled on her mon. at Westm. Abbey wife of " Trince Thomas de Wodestoke, Due de Glocestre, Count D'Essex et de Buckingham."
