York, 1688 till 1707, when, under the act of Union, he was ineligible ; was one of nobility in arms for the Prince of Orange in 16SS( e ) in support of the revolution ; Lieut.-Col. of the 3d Horse Guards, Dec. 1689 ; of the 3d Dragoons, 1691 becoming-, in 1 701, Brig. Gen. in the army. He m. about 1685, C vtharine, only da. and h. of Thomas (CoLEPErEB), 2d Baron Colkfepeu of Thores- way, Gov. of Virginia (1675-82), by Margaret, da. and coheir of Jean Van. Hesse, Signeur de Terse-hill and Wena, in Holland. He (/. 6 Jan. 1709/10, and was tor. the 10th at St. Martins in the fields, Midx. His will pr. June 1711. His widow, who inherited Leeds Castle, &c., co. Kent, besides 300,000 acres in the Shenandoah valley, in Virginia, d. 1719, and was bin: (with her parents) at Brooiufield, Kent. Will dat. 21 April and pr. 23 Juue 1719. VI. 1710. G. Thomas (Fairfax), Lord Fairfax of Cameron [&1 a. and h., b. 1692 at Denton afsd. ; matric. at Oxford (Oriel), 21 Jany. 1709/10; was sometime an officer in the Horse Guards. He sold, shortly after coming of age, Denton Hall and all the Yorkshire estates, the last sale being made in 1716. About 1739 he visited his American estates, where, in 1717, b* finally settled, being Lieut, of Frederick-county. Ho built a magnificent house called Greenway Court, near Winchester, in Virginia, where he d. mini. 12 March 1782, aged 90, being bur. at Winchester afsd. (") It is to be observed that "if any man deserved to be excepted [from pardon as a traitor] no man deserved it more than himself, who being General of the army [at the time of Charles the first's trial and execution] and having power sufficient to prevent the proceedings against the King had not thouijht fit to mate use of it to that end." They were to give all military and naval orders ; to digest all business before it was introduced to Pari., &c. Six Peers were included therein, viz., the Earls of Denbigh, Mulgrave, Pembroke and Salisbury, the Lord Grey and Lord Fairfax [SJ.
