Ch.), 3 May 1667, being cr. M.A. 15 July 1*609. He was M.P. for Lichfield in 1677, but having, some nine years previously, sue. his nephew Sir Robert Shirley, the 6th Bart., 11 March 1008/9, he became thereupon heir gen. to his parents, and consequently (iu right of his mother) a coheir (i.e., heir to a moiety) of the Barony of Ferrers( c ) and by favour of the King() ( a ) The coheirs were (1) his sister Frances, who m. William (Seymour), Duko of Somerset, and d. 23 Nov. 1679, whose representative (thro' the families of Seymour, Bruce, Brydges, and Grenville), was the Duke of Buckingham and Chaudos, who d. B.p.m. 26 March 1889, leaving daughters and coheirs (2) Sir Robert Shu-ley, Bart., 2d but 1st surv. s. and h. of Sir Henry Shirley, Bart., by Dorothy, yr. sister of the above Frances, which Dorothy d. 30 March 1030. The son of this Robert, ti-., another Sir Robert Shirley, Bart., who eventually (11 March 1068/9), became heir to his father and who consequently represented a moiety of the Barony of Ferrers was sum. to Pari, in that Barony 14 Dec. 1677. The abeyance of the Barony of Bourchier has never been terminated tho' it was (wrongly) attributed in 1784 to George (Townahend), Lord de Ferrera. See vol, i, p. 395, note "b," sub "Bourchier." ( d ) Courthope, in his (admirable) Observations on Dignities, states that the termina- tion of the abeyance of the Barony of Windsor in 1060 may be considered as the earliest practise (the principle having been already recognised) of such terminations iu a way analogous to the present mode. In it the King by patent (having stated the coheirs of the Lord Windsor as also that the " titulus dignitatis ct Baronia pralicla jwncs nos sunt " to be disposed of to such one of the coheirs as he thought fit), constitutes Thoma3 Hickman and his heirs to be Lords Windsor. " In the case of the Barony of Ferrera of Chartley, twelve years after, the declaratory patent was despensed with and Robert, Lord Ferrera, took hia seat under llic King's writ only.
