I., when appointed Gov. of England during the King's absence.(') He m. Maud, da. and 1). of William Fitz-Hugh, by Hawys, da. and h. of Henry de LOHOCflAHP, of Wilton Castle, co. Hereford. He d. (1307/8), 1 Ed. II. II. 1308. .?. John (Grey). Lord Grev, s. and fa., aged 40 at his father's death in 1308, having been (v.p.) Vice Justice of Chester, 1290-97. He was sum. to Pari, from 9 June (1309), 2 Ed. II., to 18 Sep. (1322), 10 Ed. II., by writs directed " Johamii de Orey." He was Justice of North Wales in 1315 and being hostile to the Court was one of the permanent couucil appointed in 1318 to keep the King in check, tho' four years later he joined the Royal cause. He hi. firstly Anne, sister of William, 1st Loud Ferrers de Giumv, da. of William Ferrers, of t.'roby, co. Leicester, by his first wife, Joane, da. of Hugh Le DiisrENcEH. He m. secondly, Maud, da. of Ralph (Basset), 1st Loud Basset de Drayton, by Margaret, da. of Roger So.meri, feudal Lord of Dudley. He d. 28 Oct. (1323), 17 Ed. n.C) III. 1 32:3. J. Henry (Grey), Lord de Grey, s. and h. by first wife, aged 40 at bis father's death in 1321 when he was serving in the wars with France. He was sum. to Pari, from 30 Dee. (1324). 18 Ed. Reginald (Grey), Lord de Grey, s. and h., aged 30 at his father's death in 1342. He was sum. to Pari, from 24 Feb. (1342 3), 17 Ed. III., to 20 Nov. (1300), 34 Ed. III., by writs directed " Jteginaldo de Orei/," but, after (1349), 23 Ed. lit., with the addition of the word Senioi He was a Banneret (1345), 19 Kd. 111. He nt. Maud, said to have been da. of (— ) de Botetourt. (') He d. at Whitsuntide (1370), 44 Ed. III. His wife survived him. ( a ) This John was 2d s. of Henry Grey, of Greys-Thurrocks, co. Essex. See p. 90, note " a," ,u4 " Grey de Codnor," for some notice of this branch of the house of Grey. (*>) His name occurs in the Rolls of Pari, before the record of writs of summons commenced. {») His name as " lhginaldus de Grey, D'n's de Ruthyn," occurs in the famous letter of the Barons to the Tope in 1301. See "Nicolas," pp. 761— SOS. This is somewhat strange, inasmuch as " Wilton "was the denomination of his representative, while " Ruthyn " was that of his descendants in the cadet line. ( d ) The Castle of Ruthyn, &c., as also lands in Beds, &c., were inherited by his secoud s. Roger Grey (1st s. of his second wife) who was cr. Lord Grey de Ruthyn in 1324 and was ancestor of those Lords. ( n ) "But for what reason does not appear for there was not any other Grey of the name of Reginald in auy of the said summonses." She might, indeed, as she survived her UwsUuwl, have become such Abbess, but her issue would have been coheirs to the Barony of Botetourt, which in the claim of Mr. Norborne Berkeley to that dignity does not appear to have been the case.
