He apparently favoured the exiled Stuart dynastly and is said to have beou cr, a knight of the Thistle about 1722, and a Knight of the Garter in 1723, by the titular King James III. He was, however (by King George I.) a: K.T., 31 Oct. 1726 and made a Lord of the Bedchamber, June 1727, being continued in that office by George II. He m. firstly, 14 Feb. 1723, Aune,(>>) 1st da. of John (Cochrane), 4th Earl of Dundonald [S.], by his first wife, Anne, da. of Charles (Murray), 1st Earl of Dunmore [S.] She d. 14 Aug. 1724, iu her 18th year iu child bed.( c ) He m. secondly in 1727, Elizabeth, 1th da. of Thomas Stranoways, of Melbury Sampford, Dorset. She <?., s.p., 3 Nov. 1729 and was bur. there. Will dat. 24 and 25 Oct. 1729, pr. 20 Jan. 1729/30. He m. thirdly, 21 Aug. 1737, at St. Geo. Han. sq., Anne, da. and coheir of Edward Spencer, of Reudleshain, Suffolk. He d. at Bath 2 March 1743, aged 40. Will dat. 1 Feb. 1742, pr. 22 June 1743. His widow «., 22 Dec. 1751, the Hon. Richard Savage Nassau, of Eastou, Suffolk, who d. May 1780. She d. 9 March 1771. Will dat. 10 Nov. 1767, pr. 20 March 1771, directing her burial to be at Easton afsd. VI. 1743. 6. James (Hamilton), Duke op Hamilton, &c. [S.], also Duke of Brandon,( ;i ) Ac. [G. B.], 1st s. and h., being only child by the first wife; 6. 10 July 1724 ; styled Marquess of Clydesdale till 1743, when he sue. to the peerage, matric. at Oxford (St. Mary Hall), 23 Feb. 1740/1 ; cr. D.C.L. of Oxford, 14 April 1743, K.T., 8 April 1755. He m. 14 Feb. 1752 (marriage registered at May Fair chapel), Elizabeth, ( (1 ) 2d da. of John Gunnino, of Castle Coote, co. Roscommon, by Bridget, da. of Theobald (Bourkk), 6th Viscount Bourkk of Mayo [I.] He d. 17 Jan. 1758, iu his 34th year, at Great Tew, Oxon and was bur. Feb. at Hamilton. Fun. certif. in Lyon office. His widow, who was 6. at Hemiugford Grey, co. Huntingdon, m. 3 March 1759, in London, John (Campbell), 5th Duke of Argyll [S.], who d. 24 May 1806 iu his 83d year. She was e>: 20 .May 1776, BARONESS HAMILTON OF HAMELDON, co. Leicester, with rem. of that Barony to the heirs male of her body. She was Lady of the Bedchamber to Charlotte, the Queen Consort, till 1784, and rf. in London, 20 Dec. 1790, being bur. at Kilmun, co. Argyll. VII. 1758. 7. James George (Hamilton), Duke op Hamilton, &c. [S.], also Duke of Brandox,(") &e. [G.B.], 1st s. and h., b. 18 Feb. 1755, at the Abbey of Holyroodhouse, styled Marquess of Clydesdale till 1758 when (at the age of three) he sue. to the peerage. By the death, 21 July 1767, of Archibald (Douglas), Duke of Douglas [S.J, he became head of his paternal line of Douglas and sue. to the titles of Marquess of Douglas, Eaul of Anqus, Lord Abernethy and Jedruroh Forest [1633], and of Eaul of Angu3(°) [1389], in the peerage of 3cotland.( f ) His Grace d. unm. 7 July 1796, in his 15th year, at Hamilton Palace, and was bur. at Hamilton. M.I. him well, says, *' I will add no character of him ; I am sorry I cannot say so much good of him as I could wish and I had too much kindness for him to say any evil without necessity." (") Neither he nor any other Duke of Brandon received a writ of summons to the House of Lords (iu consequence of the resolution of that House, 14 Jan. 1720), till 11 Juue 1782, when, first the right thereto was allowed. See vol. iii, p. 164, note " d" sub "Dover." The 2d Duke of Brandon was a candidate as a Scotch Hep. Peer in 1734.
