He, with the Earl of Norfolk, opposed many of the King's arbitrary measures as to taxation, foreign service, &c, but afterwards assisted in the Scotch wars and was 22 July 1208, at the buttle of Falkirk. Humphrey (de Bohun), Earl of Hereford, nnd Earl of Essex, ncrtditan/ Constable, a. and h.,6. about 1276 ; sue. his father 30 Nov. 1298 ; did homage, 16 Feb. 1299, and was at the siege of Carlaverock.( b ) He m., 14 Nov. 1302, at Westminster, the Lady Eleanor (Plan- ta(ienet), willow of John, Count of Holland and Zealand, Sth da. of King Edward I., by his first wife, Eleanor, da. of Ferdinand III., Kino of Castile. She, who was 6. Aug. 12S2, at lthudlan Castle, co. Carnarvon, d. at Quenden in Essex a few days after giving birth, 5 May J316. to her 10th child and was bur. at Walden Abbey. This illustrious alliance brought him a grant, 10 April 1306, from his father in law, of the Castle of Lochmabeu and all the lands of Annaudale the inheritance of Robert Bruce, which " on account of the felony of the said Robert " had escheated to the Crown, whereby the Earl is ofteu spoken of as Lord of Annaudale in Scotland. At the coronation of Edw. II. (28 Feb. 130S) he was bearer' of the Sceptre with the cross. In 1310 he was one of 21 ordaiuers to reform the household of the King whose measures he consistently opposed. Ho was taken prisoner at B&nnockburn 21 June 1314, but soon exchanged. Joining tin- rebellion of the Earl of Lancaster he was slaiu at the battle of Boroughbridge, co. York, 16 March 1321/2, and was bur. in the church of the Friars Preachers at York. John (de Bohun), Earl of Hereford, and Earl of Essex, Hereditary Const 'ble, 2d bat 1st surv. s. and h., b. 1307 ; sue. his father, 16 March 1321/2; was knighted (together with the King) 1 Feb. 1327, by Johu of Haiuault. Being in infirm health his br., Edward de Bohun, was his deputy as to the office of Constable. He m. firstly, 1325, Alice, da. of Kduiund (Fitz Alan), Earl of Arundel, by Alice, da. of John de W arenne, alias 1'lantaoenkt. She d. s.p., soon after her marriage, and was bur. at Walden. He m. secondly Margaret said to bo da. of Ralph, Lord Basset. He d. s.p. at Kirby Thore, co. Westmorland, 20 Jan. 1335/6, and was bur. at Stratford Abbey near London. XI. 1336. 6. Humphrey (de Bohun), Earl of Hereford, and Earl of Essex, Hereditary Constable, br. and h., b. 1311. Ho attended the King into France, 1346, for the relief of Aguillon. He d. unm. at l'leshy afsd. 15 Oct. 1361, aged 50. and was bur. at St. Austin's Friars, London. Humphrey (de Bohun), Earl of Hereford, Earl to of Essex, and Earl of Northampton, nephew and h., being s. and h. 1373. of William, Earl of Northampton (so cr. 16 March 1337), by Elizabeth, da. of Bartholomew he BaDLKBMBBB, which William was yr. br. of the last Earl of Hereford and Essex aud d. 16 Sep. 1360, (■) On the vigil of the circumcision 27 Ed. 1. ( h ) " A rich aud elegant [metailet] young man." ( c ) His will is among the archives of he Duchy of Lancaster and is printed in the Arch. Inst, vol. ii, pp. 339-317. He directs his burial to be at Walden by his wife, and leaves to his eldest son " an entire bed of green, powdered with white swans." The w hite swan was the badge of the De Boliuns whence on the accession to the throne of Henry IV. (who m. a coheir of that race) it becauie a badge of the Royal House of Lancaster.
