I.IO:"), "he is entered in the rolls of Purl, as Earl of Glencarne,"( h ) and (with his wife and son) had a charter, 24 July 1511, "of the Earldom and Barony of Glencairn."^) lie engaged in the attempt to rescue King James V. A. about 1490; known, v.p., as Master of Kilmaurs ; knighted before 1509; High Treasurer [8.], June to Oct. 1526 ; was on OB Embassy to France, 1538, about which time lie sue. to the peerage [S.] ; was taken prisoner by the English, at Nolway, Nov. 1542 (being then an Earl), but ransomed for £4000; was on an Embassy to England, 1543, whose interests he generally (receiving a pension accordingly), supported, obtaining remission, 12 Dec. 1544, from Pari. [SJ, for all treasons committed. He was zealous for the reformed religion. [§•1 called " the good Earl 1st surv. e. and h., by second wife, stykd v.p., Loud Kilmauhs, Master ok Glencairn ; was (with his father), as early as 1540, and thro' all his life, a zealous supporter of the reformed faith. He skc. to the peerage [S.], 1547. He, at the head of 2,500 men, assisted the Tf^ormers in 1559, against the Queen Regent; V. C. [S.], 1561 ; had a high command against Queen Mary, at Carberry Hid, in 1567 ; and again at Loch Leveu in 1568 ; demolished altars, images, pictures, &c., at Holyrood Chapel, and elsewhere; was bearer of the Sword at the Coronation of James VI. [S. ], and joint Lieut, of the West of Scotland. He m- firstly, Johanna, da. of James (Hamilton), 1st Earl ok Arran [S.], by his third wife, Janet, da. of Sir David Bktoun. Lord Kilmaurs, Master ok Glencairn. He siic, to the peerage [S.J about 1580. He was engaged in the "raid of Ruthven," 15S2; P.O. to James VI. S28. {") Wood's "Douglas," where it is added, "Thus he was restored to his grand- father's title." but Maidment (See p. 30, note " f,") writes, " When the title was restored is uncertain, but it was enjoyed by Alexander the good Earl" ; thus Maidment utteriy ignores the "belting " creation of 1503, alluded to in the text. (*) A charter of that date was granted to her as " Johanna;, olim coujugi Alexandri, Magistri de Glencairn." (•) The " decreet of ranking of the nobility " [S.] took place 5 March 1606, and the Karldom of Glencairn was placed therein as 15th Earl ; Eglintouu, Montrose, Casaillis, and Caithness, being the four immediately above him. The Court of Session, however, at the instance of the Earl of Glencairn " reduced " the decree so far as to give him precedence over Eglintoun and the other three Earls. These nobles,
