Feb. 17S1 ; entered the army in 1793 ; served in Egypt, 1801-02 ; at Martinique as Lieut -Col. 13th Foot, in 1S09, and was in com- mand till the end of the war with France in 1814, being present at the battles of Vittoria, the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Sec. In Dec 1S14 he made a successful attack on New Orleans, kc. ; K.C.B. 2 Jan. 1815, being then Major Gen. ; Gov. of St. Lucia, 1818-25; Commander in Chief at Jamaeia from 1823 to 1830; Lieut. Gen. in the army, 1830; G.C.H., 1831. From 1833 to 1839 he was Commander in Chief at Bombay, conducting the foices in the Afghanistan expedition and capturing the city of Guuzueef a ) 23 .Inly 1839.
