Inn) 1807; M.P. for the Fortrose burglis 1807-18, and for Jp.vernesshire 1818-35 ; was a Lord of the Treasury 1813-19; P.C. 1819: Vice President 1823-27, and President, 1827-28, of the Board of Trade, under the Conservative ministry ; President of the Board of Control, 1830-34, under the Whig ministry, and finally, from April 1834 to Jan. 1839, Sec. of State for the Colonies, being cr., 1 1 May 1835, BAB ON GLENELGO 1 ) of Glenelg, co. Inverness. " The Canadian rebellion of 1838 was fatal to his reputation, and resulted in the resignation of his office "( b ), his conduct being (not inaptly) stigmatised by the King as "vacillating and procrastinating."( b ) After this beheld no office but that of a Commissioner of the land tax, with a pension of £2,000 a year. He m. 13 Aug. 1793, Emily, da. of St. John Jkiteuies, of Blarney Castle, co. Cork, by Arabella, sister of John, 1st Earl of Clare [I.], da. of John Fitz Gibbon, of Mount Shannon, co. Limerick. He d. 80 Jan. 1819, aged 43, at Caher Castle, co. Tipperary. Will pr. 1820. His widow d. 2 May 1836, aged 69, in Grosvenor square, Mids. IT. 1819, ,?. Richard (Butler), Earl of Glengall (1816), to Viscount Caher [1816], and Baron Caher [1583], in the peerage 1858. of Ireland, only s. and h , 1. 17 May 1794, at Cork ; styled Viscount Caher, 1816-19; sue to the peerage [I.], Jan. 1819 ; Rep. Peer [I.], 1829-58 ; Col. of the Tipperary Militia. He m. 20 Feb. 1834, at St. Geo. Han. sq., Margaret Lauretta, 2d and yst. da. and coheir of William Melhuish, of Woodford, Essex. He d. s.p.m., 22 Jan. 1858, when the Earldom and Viscountcy certainly, and the Barony possibly became extinct.(<>) His widow d. at No. 25, Grosvenor square, Midx., 2 April 1S64.
