(nf the half blood) anil and b., being a. nf 0th Earl by bis second wife; 4. 28 Feb. 1525, being 15C9. but 10 years old at the time of bis brother's surrender. lie escaped into France in 1 540, whence lie went to Rome, taking part, with the Knights of Rhodes, against the Moors. After the death of King Henry VIII., 1547, he returned to England, where, having m. 29 May 155 1 at the Chapel Koyil (mar. lie. London) Mabel, sister to Anthony, 1st Yiscoi NT Mostacttk, da. of Sir Anthony Buowne, K.G., Master of the Horse, by Alice, da, of Sir John Gaok. K G,. he was, by the influence of hit father-in-law, restored to his Irish estates, by letters patent. 25 April 1552, being Knighted about the same time. He signed the letters patent of 10 June 1553 for the succession of Lady Jane Grey to the Crown. ( h J, but, having distinguished himself in the cause of Queen Mary, during Wvatt's insurrection, was by her, Ml 13 May 1554, " restored to the titles of EAKIi OF KILDARE and BARON OF OFFALY [I.] by letters patent dat. at the Manor of St. James', with a creation fee of .£20 to be received by him and his heirs male out of the customs of the Port of Dublin. The attainder, however, was not revered until 1500. "( c ) when, on 23 Feb. 156S/9 (11 Eli/..) an act was passed to repeal the statute (28 Hen. YI11.) attainting the Earl of Kildare( d ). Between thete two dates he had, in 1550. sat in Pari, fl.j He took an active part against the rebels of Monster, aided by the Spanish, 1679-82, but was soon afterwards accused of treason anil imprisoned in Loudon, tho' permitted to return to Ireland in 1583, where he sat in the Pari, of 20 April 1585, He d. in London 10 Nov. 1585, aged (i0. and was i«r, 13 Feb. following at Kildare. The so-called rcstjration, by the Crown [only], in 1554 is apparently but a creation. (d) This act, entitled "An act for restoring the Karl of Kildare. his brother [Edward] and sisters [Margaret, Elisabeth and Cceile] to their blood" is printed in appendix V to the " Earls of Kildare." . In it " Gerald Fitz Gerald " is spoken of as ' now Earl of Kildare," thus acknowledging his creation in 1564 as such, previous to his restoration. (') It does not appear that he was ever styled Lord Offaly, tho', that Barony was (by the restoration of 13 May 1554) vested in his father, who in his will*peaks of hJm as '" my deceased sonne, the Lord Qarratt," and of his (testator's) then son and heir, Henry as " Lord Henry Fitz Geruld," (0 Lettice, his only da. and h., m. Sir Robert Digby, of Coleshill, co. Warwick, who (I. 24 May 1018. This lady, about 1608. laid elaini to the estates of her grand- father, as also to the Baron v of Oflaly as heir acneral of that dignity, and was 20 July 1020, conflrmed in the title of BARONESS OF OFFALY [LJ (which "she had long enjoyed ") for her life, the same " to revert again to the house of Kildare and not to the children of the said Lady Lettice."
