Somerset (tli.it lady being first cousiu to the well known philosopher, John Locke), was 6. at Exeter, 1070 ; ed. at the Grammar School there and for some time was an apprentice to his father but afterwards studied the lawatLcyden; Barrister (Slid. Temple), 8 June 1098 ; M.P. for Beeralstou in five Paris., 1700 to 1715; Recorder of Glastonbury, 1705; Recorder of London, 27 July 1708, being knighted 12 Sep, 1708. At the accession of George I. he (being then the Whig leader in the House of Commons) was made, per 3ut/um, 14 Nov. 171-1, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas which office he held 11 years. In Jan. 1725 he was made Speaker o£ the House of Lords and presided, 11 May 1725, as Lord High Steward, at the trial of Lord Macclesfield (ex-Lord Chancellor), beiug cr., 29 May 1725, LORD ICING, BARON OF OCKHAM, co. Surrey, and a few days later being made Lord Chancellor, a post he held till 29 Nov. 1733. He was also one of the Lords Justices of the Realm during the King's absence, 1725 and 1727. Ue m. Sep. 1704 at her age of 15 (mar. lie.) Anne, da of Richard Seys, of Uoverion Court, co. Glamorgan. He il. of paralysis (eight mouths after his resignation), 22, and was bur. 29 July 1734, aged 05, at Ockham, Surrey("). M.I. V ill pr. 1734. His widow d. 1 July 1767, and was bur. at Ockham. John (King), Loud King, Baron of Ockham, 1st s. and h., lap. 13 Jan. 1705/6 at St. Clement Danes, Midx. ; Out- ranger of Windsor Forest, 1 July 1720 ; M.P. for Launccstou, 1727 till he sue to the peerage in July 1734. He m. May 1720 at Yarley, Devon, Elizabeth, da. of Robert Fry, of Yarley. She d. 28 Jan 1733/4, in her 23d year, and was bur. at Yarley. He d. s.p. on board H.M.S. the Ruby, off Lisbon, 10 Feb. 1739/40, and was bur. at Ockliam. Admou. 2 April 1740. III. 1740. 3. Peter (King), Loud King, Bahon of Ockham, br. and h-, bap. 13 March 1708/9 at St. Clement Danes, afsd. Sue. to the peerage 10 Feb. 1739/40, and was appointed Outranger of Windsor Forest. He d. unm. 22 March 17o4, and was bur. 31st at Ockham. Will pr, 1754. IV. 1754. 4- William (King), Lord King, Baron of Ockham, br. and h., b. 15 April 17H, and lap, at St. Clement Danes, afsd-; sue. to the peerage 22 March 1754 ; Cursitor of London and Middlesex. He rf. unm. 16 April 1767, and was bur. 24 at Ockham. Admon. 11 May 1767. V. 1767, 5. Ttomas (King), Lord King, Baron of Ockham, br. and h., 6. 19 March, and bap. 27 April 1712 at St. Clement Danes, Middlesex; sue. to the peerage 16 April 1707. He m. 17 Aug. 1734, at the French Church at Delft, in Holland, Wilhelmina Catherina, da. of John Trove, oue of the Judges of the Sovereign Council at Brabant. He t{. 24 April 1779, aged 67, and was bur. at Ockham. Will pr. April 1779. His widow d. 3 June 1783. ( a ) As a common law judge he obtained " the approbation of lawyers for his learn- ing and of suitors for his impartiality," but " the admiration which he had earned a3 a judge cannot be extended to him as a Chancellor," inasmuch as "he had not had any experience in equity practice and consequently was diffident, irresolute, aud dilatory," the number of his decisions that were " reversed or contradicted " being very great. See Foss's "Judges." He was the author of some theological treatises chiefly advocating the claims of the P re s by terians. The Queen Consort of George II. is said to have, remarked >n him (Hervey's "Memoir*," I, 281) that "he waB just in the Laio what he had been in the Gospel ; making creeds upon the one without any steady belief, aud judgments in the other without any settled opinion."
