Charles ToWKBHBKD, I 17G7 relict of Francis Scott, styled Eahl ok Dalkeith, 1st da. and (in to ' 1743) one of the four coheirs of John (Campbell), 2d Duk!-: OF Argyll , , [S.], 1st Duke and Earl ok Greenwich, by his second wife, Jane, da. of Thomas Warrurton, was b. 7 Nov, 1717, at Sudbrooke, co. Surrey ; m. firstly, 2 Oct. 1742, at her father's house, Brutou street, Midx., Fiancis Scott, styled Eahl ok Dalkeith, who d. 1 April 1750 (in the lifetime of his father, Francis, 2d Duke of Bucclkvch [S.]) aged 29; m. secondly, IS Sep. 175"., at Adderbury, Oxou (Lie. Fac. off.) the Rt. Hon. Charles Townshkxp (L'd s. of Charles, 3d Viscou.vr Tow.vshend), and was cr., 19 Aug. 1767, BARONESS OF GREENWICH, co. Kent, with rem. of that dignity to the heirs male of her body by her then husband. He, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer iu 1766, d. 4 Sep. 1767, aged 42, a few weeks after his wife's elevation to the peerage. The Baroness, who was Hanger of Greenwich Park, d. at Sudbrooke afsd. s.p.m.s. 11th and was bur. 25 Jan. 1794, aged 76, in Westm. Abbey, when the Barony became extinct. Will dat. 3 Aug. 1791, pr. 1 Feb. 1794. GRELLE, see Gresley. GRENDON. Barony by %, Sir Ralph Grendon, of Grendon, co. Warwick, and Writ. Shenston, co. Stafford, s. and h. of Sir Ralph G., of the same, by his lirst wife, Johanna, was in the wars with Scotland and was sum. to T. 1299. Pari, as a Baron (LORD GRENDON) by writs from 29 Dec. (1299), 28 Ed. L, to 12 Nov. (1303), 32 Ed. £(*) It is possible he is the same person who, as JtobtrtQ 1 ) de Grendon, was so sum. from 22 Jan. (1304/5), 35 Ed. I, to 3 Nov. (1306), 34 Ed. I. He is said to have d, (1331), 5 Ed. III. J I. 1331? ft. Rouert Grendon, s. and h., who possibly may be to that Robert Grendon who was sum. by writ (as Lord Grendon) from 13 IS. 22 Jan. (1304/5), 33 Ed. L, to 3 Nov. (1306), 34 Ed. III. In that case such summons would be v.p. unless the date of his father's death (as given above) is erroneous. Both conj eetures are, however, unlikely, as he is said (by Dugdale) to have been "of weak understanding." He d. s.p. about (1348), 22 Ed. III., when the right to any Barony cr. by any of these writs appears to have devolved- ou the issue of his only sister, Joan, wife of John Rochkord.( c ) Robert de Grendon was sum. to Pari, as a Baron (LORD GRENDON) by writs from 22 Jan. (1304/5), 33 Ed. I., to 3 Nov. (1306), 34 Ed. III., but of him nothing is known unless, possibly, he is the same as one of the above mentioned Barons. ( a ) He was one of the Rarons whose name as " Radulphus. D'n's de Grendon" appears in the famous letter to the Pope 1301. See " Nicolas," pp. 761—809. ( b ) Banks iu his " Bur. Angl." conjectures Robert to be a misprint for Ralph, stating such typographical errors to be too frequently apparent in Dugdale's printed lists." The word " Jlobto," however, appears in the list of summons printed iu 1826 in the " Reports nn the dignity of a Peer." ( c ) Theirs, and h., Sir Ralph Rochfort, never appears to have made any claim to the Barony. He is said to have il. about (1385-86), 8 Ric. [[., leaving a da. and h., Margaret, who m. Hugh de Askcby, but the estate of Grendon came, by agreement, to the Chetwynd family, descended from one of the daughters of the first Lord. This Sir Ralph had also 3 sisters, but iu Townseud's " additions to J)ut/dalc's Baronage " [Cell. Top. et ticn., vol. vii, p. 270), it is said of this Barony that it is extinct ; " there being no issue remainiug of the first Peer." I. 1305 to 1306.
