Wostmealh, anil Alethea, his wife, was 6., 16 Feb. 1778, at Lyndhurst afsd. ; ed. at Christ's Hospital, London, and at Winchester College; entered the army, 1791 ; served in Holland, 1799, and in Egypt, 1S01 ; distinguished himself at the battle of Maida, 4 July 1806 ; was Mil. Sec. to Sir John Moore, in Sicily, Sweden, Portugal, and Spain, bring with him at the battle of Coruuna, 16 Jan. 1809, ami serving subsequently, under Wellington, in the Peninsula at the battles of Ocana, Busneo, Albuera, Citulad Hodrigo, Salamanca, Vittoria, the Nivolle and the Nive, Orthes, anil Toulouse, and finally at Waterloo, where he commanded the Slid Light Infantry and where "of his own accord he led the forward movement which determined the fortune! of the day."( :l ) K.C.B., 1815, receiving also the foreign orders of the Tower and Sword of Portugal, of the Maria Theresa of Austria, and of the St. George of ltussiu ; Lieut. Qov.of Guernsey, 1825; Lieut.Gov. of Upper Canada, 1828-38, in which capacity he, with great promptitude and prudence, quelled therebellion that there broke out. He was, accordingly, cr. 14 Dec. 1839, BARON SBAT0N,( b ) of Seaton, co. Devon, with an auuuitv of £2,000 for himself and his two next successors. He had previously been G.C.H. in 1830 and G.C.B. in 183S. He was L. High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands (a sinecure post), 1813 49 ; G.C.M.G., 1843. In 1851 he became Gen. in the army and CoL of the 2d Life. Guards, having been for some years Col. of the 26th Foot. He commanded the troops in Ireland, from 1855 to 1860; was P.C. [(.], I860, and was made (when aged SI) FlKI.n Marshal, 30 March I860 ; Col. in Chief of the liifle Brigade, 1862. He OT. 21 June 1814, at Flaxley, co. Gloucester, Elizabeth, 1st da. of Kev. James YuNiiE, of Puslinch, Rector uf Newton Ferrers, both co. Devon, by Anne, da. of Edmund GRANDER, of the Castle, Exeter. He tt. at Valetta House, Torquay, 17 and was bur. 24 April 1863, at Newton Ferrers, in his S6th year. His widow d. 28 Nov. 1S72, at Beechwood House, co. Devon, aged 82. II. 1S63. 2. James (Colborne), Baron Seaton, 1st s. ami li., b. 1816; entered the army, 1844, becoming (1877) Lieut. Gen. null being placed on the retired list in 1881 as full General. He served under his father as Aide- de-Camp during the Canadian rebellion and as Mil. Sec. (1855-60) in Ireland. He sue. to the pceruye, 17 April 1863. He became bankrupt in July 1888. ( c ) He m. 12 Feb. 1851, at St. Geo. Han. sip, Charlotte, yr.i/'j of the two daughters and coheirs of Ulysses (DE Burgh), 2d Baron Downes [I.], by his first wife, Maria, da. and h. of Walter Baoenal. She, who was b. 27 Jan. 1826, rf. 26 April 1863, after a few days' illness at Valetta House, Torquay. He d. 11, and was Our. 20 Oct. 1888, from Beechwood afsd., at Newton Ferrers. Admou. 1889 at £28,161. (") "Annual Register" for 1863, where it is added that Wellington "saw the movement and instantly sent to desire him to continue it. This fact, which was long questioned, has been since abundantly confirmed." It is, however, stated in the Aut. ■ Jjiogr. that " there can be no doubt that the Duke of Wellington never gave fair credit to Colborne's exploit." ('■) It is said he would much have preferred to have been cr. Baron Colborne, but, unfortunately, only eight months before, the Burouy of Colborne of West Harling had been conferred on Mr. Hidley-Colborne. ( c ) The liabilities were £140,216, of which not more than £7,326 was expected to rauk, and the assets were but £600. It appeared that in 1864 he inherited large estates in the counties of Hertford, Bedford, and Worcester, since mortgaged for £132,000, the income being only sufficient to pay the mortgage interest. A scheme to pay 5s. in the £1 was confirmed 17 July 1888. ( d ) Her elder sister, Aune, became Countess of Clonmell [1.1
