Lord William Douglas, afterwards Douglas- T 1G46 Hamilton, 3d a. of William (Douoxas), 1st Marquess up Douous ' [8.J, being bia 1st a, by his second wife, Mary, da, of George (Gordon), 1st M ahiii ess OP HDNTLT [3.], was b. 21 Dec. 1634, led was in his 12th year a: 4 Aug. 1849, EARL OF SELKIRK, LORD DAER AND SHOUTCLF.UCH [S.]. with rem. to his heirs male bearing the name of Douglas. Having in. 29 April 1656, Ann«, »uo jure DrjCBBM ot Hamilton, he was cr. 20 !?ep. 1660, DUKE OF HAMILTON, kc. [S.], for life. Ho, consequently, tho' some 28 years afterwards, resinned the Earldom of Selkirk, &e., iu l'ivvour nf Charles ami other his younger sons to whom it was regrauted as below. ' c j when, apparently, he assumed his patronymic of Douylax.fi) He was Col. of the 1st Beg. of Horse, Nov. to Dec. 1688. and was a warm supporter of the Revolution, attending Will. III. in many of his campaigns, being also a Lord of the Bedchamber to him, to Geo. I., and Geo. II.; L. Clerk Register [S.], 1696—1702, and again, 1733-39; B.C. ; L. Lieut, and High Sheriff of Clydesdale ; a strenuous opposer of the Union ( ;v ) The children of Anne, aeto jure Duchess of Hamilton [S.], appear to have borne at their birth her name of Hamiltou, uot that of Douglas, their patronymic. Of these there were no less than seven sons, viz. (1) James who became, in 1698, Duke of Hamilton [S.], being ancestor of all the succeeding Dukes (2) William, who it. B.p. in France, presumably before the ni-rodamiis of the Earldom of Selkirk in 16S3 (3) Charles, who became Earl of Selkirk in 1688 (4) John, Earl of Ruglen [S.], who became Earl of Selkirk in 1739(5) George, Earl of Orkney [SJ, who <t. s.p.ui. iu 1737 (6) Lord Basil Hamilton, who it. 1701, aged 30, being ancestor of the 4th, 5tli and 6th Earls of Selkirk (7) Lord Archibald Hamilton, who rf. 5 April 1754, whose issue male became extinct on the death of his Bons, of whom the survivors were the well-known Sir William Hamilton, K.B., Ambassador at Naples, it. 8 April 1803, aged 72, and the Rev. Frederick Hamiltou, of Riccartoun, d. 18 Feb. 1811, in his 83d year. ( b ) The date of Birth (as above) on his coffin plate, does not altogether tally with the baptism which is stated in Wood's Douglas to be as above. This latter is probably wrong, as the double date (old and uew style) of the former seems more precise. ( c ) There was a proviso that if the said Charles, or any of his brothers, or the heirs male of their bodies should succeed to the Dukedom of Hamilton that, iu such case this Earldom "semper desceudet ad fratrem immediate junioreni illi qui ad titulum Ducis de Hamilton succedere coutingerit et hicredibus inasculis de eju9 corpore ; quibus deficientibus ut supra dictum est pertinebit." This proviso never came into effect as far as these yr. brothers were concerned, the Dukedom having ever since remained in the eldest brother and his issue, while the issue male of all the younger ones became extinct in 1885. <*) Sec note « a " above.
