(1) the Barony of Percy, cr. by writ in 1722, devolved on his da. and heir general (2) the Earldom of Sorlhumherland and Barony of Warkicortk {cr. 17491 on his son-in-law, .Sir Hugh S.mituson abovenamed (3) the Earldom of Eyre moat ami Barony of Cockcrmouth on his nephew, Sir Charles Wy.ndh.am, Bart., while, of the titles that he had inherited, (4) the Earldom of Hertford [1550], the Barony of Hmi- champ [1559] and the Barony of Seymour of Trowbridye [ 1*34 1 J became extinct, but the Dukedom of Somerset and the Barony of Seymour devolved as below. Wilts, which Edward (who d. 29 Dec. 1741, aged SO), was s. and h of Sir Edward Seymour, 4th Bart., sometime Speaker of tho House of Commoni Id. 17 Feb. 17CS, aged 74), s. and h. of Sir Edward Seymour, 3.1 Bart. (if. 7 Dec. 1GSS), s. and h. of Sir Edward Seymour, 2d B ut. (d. 5 Oct. 1659), s. and h. of Sir Edward Seymour, 1st Bart, (so cr. 29 June 1611 ;d. 11 April 1613). s. and h. of Sir Edward Seymour (rf. 6 .May 1598*, all of Berry Poiueroy, co. Devon, wbioh Edward lastnamed was eldest s. of Edward, 1st Duke Ot Somerset, being by hU jirst wife, whose issue was postponed in their right of succession to that Dukedom Jtc. to the issue by his second wife, whose issue male became extinct in 1750 on the death of the late Duke. He was bap. 17 Jan. 1694/5, at Easton, co. Wilts ; mat. at Oxford (Mag. Coll.) 15 March 1711/2; sue. his father as r.lk Baronet, 29 Dec. 1740 ; was M.P. for Salisbury, 1741-47, and sue. to the peeraije, 7 Feb. 1749/50, on the death of his distant cousin the 7th Duke. His claim was favourably reported U[ion, 23 Nov. 1750, and he was sum. to pari, accordingly, 16 Jan. 1 750/1 . He was chief mourner at the funeral of the Prince of Wales, in April 1751 ; was L. Lieut, of Wilts, and Chief Justice north of Trent, 1752 57. He in. 8 March 1716, Mary, da. and h. of Daniel Webb, of Monekton Farley and Melksham, co. Wilts, by Eliza- beth, da. of John, sister aud h. of Edward So.mner, of Secud, in that county. He (") Collins gives him a grand eulogium concluding with stating that "he had every [!] amiable quality." His handsome portrait "after Sir G. Kueller" is engraved in " Doyle." (°) She is mentioned in Park's "Royal and Noble Author.*," and is the Lady whose " carroty " locks are celebrated by Swift. («) In his burial register he is called "The Rt. Hon. Lord George Seymour, Viscount Beauchamp, b. and h. ap. to the Rt. Hon. Algernon, Earl of Hertford, &c." 'I here was, however, no Viscountcy of any kind vested in his grandfather; the Viscountcy of Beauchamp conferred in 1536 on his ancestor, Edward Seymour (afterwards the 1st Duke of Somerset) was then, as now (together with the Earl- dom of Hertford, cr. 1537), under attainder and even had it not been so, would have belonged to the Seymours of Berry Poiueroy, the heirs male of the body of the grantee by his first wife, tho' such heirs were postponed (by a spec. rem.] I ™ those by his second wife as to the succession to the Dukedom of Somerset, sc., titles subsequently conferred.
