Faithful, throughout, to the lioyal cause, he was Juint Commr. for the King at the conferences of Oxford in 104-3, Uxbridge iu 1045 and Newport iu 16JS, being one of the Peers who in Oct. 1047, intended to reside with the King at Hampton Court as his Council,^} and one of the four persons who offered themselves to the Commons for punishment iu lieu of their Royal master;(") Councillor to the Prince of Wales, 1645. He was nom.K.G. at Jersey, Jan. 1649/50 ; inv. at Canterbury, 27 May 1660, and inst., 15 April 1661. He had meanwhile <"c. on the death s.p.m. of his father-in-law, 21 Dec. 1653, as EAKL OF C1HC11ES TEH, under the spec, rem.in the creation, 3 June 1614, of that dignity, which see. At the restoration in 1660 he was made P.C. and L. High Treasurer, an office he held till his death 7 years later. He was also L. Lieut, of Norfolk, 1660-61 ; Of Hants, 1660 j of Wilts, 1061 ; of Worcestershire, 1062-63 ; and of Kent, 1662. He. m. firstly 18 Aug. 1034 in France (registered at Titchtield), Rachel, widow of Elysee dk Beacjki', Seigneur df. la M.usonfort, 1st da. of Daniel de Massde, Seigneur de Ruviosy, in France, by his first wife, Madeleine PinuT. Pdie, who was b. 1003, d. in child bed, 10 Feb 1 639/] n, in Tothill street, Westminster, and was bur. at Titchtield. Funeral eertif. in Pub. Record office. He m. secondly, about 24 April 1012, Elizabeth, ( e ) 1st da. and coheir of Francis (LlilOH), Eaul ok Chichester (so cr. 3 June 1044, with a tpec rem. as afsd.), by Audrey, sister and coheir of William (Poteler), 2d Baron Botelf.h of BraNTFIELD. She was living 2 Sep. 1652, the date of her father's will. He m. thirdly Frances, widow of Richard (Moi.YNEnx), 2d ViscotINT MOLYNEUX OF M&HYBORolT.n [I.], who d. s.p. about 1653, da. of William (SEVMoun), 2d DuKE of Somerset, by his second wife, Frances, da. of Robert (Deveueux), 2d Eaul of EIssex. He d. s.p.ui.s.(') 16 May 1667, aged about 60, at his residence, Southampton House, Bloomslmry, iu St. Giles's iu the fields, and was bur. at Titchtield, when all his honours became extinct. His widow, by ( a ) " Mrs. Vermn is from the Court and lies in Essex House ; some say she hath taken a venue under the girdle and swells upon it, yet she complains not of foul play, but say» the Earl of Southampton will justify it ; and it is bruited underhand that he was lately here four days in great secret of purpose to marry her and effected it accordingly."
