Salop, was s. and h. of Sir William Jkrmnguam, 6th Bart , of the same, by Frances, da. of Henry (DnxOM), 11th VlscorST Dillon OF Costkllo Gallkn [I.], which William (who it. 14 Aug. ISO!), aged 73), was s. and h. of Sir George Jkhninhha-M, 5th Bart. (d. 21 .Ian. 1774, aged 91), by Mary (d. Sep. 1735), 1st da. and eventually b. of Francis PlOWMW, of Plowdeu, co. Salop (if April 1712 at St. Germain e>i-laye l>y Mary {U. 26 April 1765), only sister of John Paul (Stafford-Howard), Ith Haul OB STAFFORD, aboveuamed, wild, but for the attainder of 167S, would have been Baron Stafford. He was 6. 27 April 1771 ; sue. his father as 7</i Baronet (a dignity cr. 16 Oct. 1621), 14 Aug. 1S09. He obtained 17 June 1S24, the reversal of the attainder in 167S of his ancestor, Viscount Stafford, whereby (ill right of his descent abovestated) he became KARON STAFFORD [1640], and' the House of Lords resolved accordingly. 6 July 1826, that he had made out his claim^) to l/ic title, dignity, and konoui of Baron Stajari as *r. by letters patent, 12 Sep. (1640), 16 Car. I.M By Royal lie., 5 Oct. 1S26, he took the name of Stafford before that of Jenuntjltam ; was F.S.A. He n. firstly, 26 Dec. 1799, Frances Henrietta, yst. da. and coheir of Edward Si'lyahdk, of Haughley Park, co. Suffolk, by Susanna, da. of George Havknscroft, of Wickham (») His claim to the Barony of Stafford had been controverted by Richard Stafford Cooke, as heir general of Dorothy, da. of Henry Stafford, cr. Baron Stafford in 1547, which Dorothy Ml. Sir William Stafford, of Grafton. That claim was grounded on the supposition (disallowed in the Beaumont case) that, by attainder, the issue of the attainted person was " dead in law and, as such, the same as if they bad never been born." The descent of itself proved nothing, for neither the said Dorothy nor her descendants in any way represented the family, she having had four brothers, two of whom left issue still existing, the present (1S96) Baron Stafford deducing from the elder, while Roger, Baron Stafford (the last of the male line) and his sister, Jane (see p. 214, note " k "), were children of the younger. ( b ) A short resume of the Stafford titles (above dealt with) is, as below. The Earldom, cr. 1351, was forfeited in 1522 by the attainder (after death) of Edward (Stafford), Duke of Buckingham (the 8th Earl), and so continues. The EARLDOM, cr. 1688, for life, in favour of Mary, sao jure Baroness Stafford, became extinct on the death of the grantee in 1693, while the Earldom cr. (also) in IfiSS in favour of her first and other sons, became extinct in 1762 on failure of the issue male of the grantee and his brothers. The ViscoUNTOT, cr. 1640, was forfeited in 1678 by the attainder of the grantee, and, tho' that attaiuder was repealed in 1824, it had previously become extinct on failure of the issue male of the grantee in 1762. As to the Baroniks (1) that cr. by the writ of 1298/9 was forfeited (in like manner as the Earldom of 1351) by the attainder in 1522 abovenamed and so continues. If, however, such attaiuder were repealed that Barony would devolve on the present Lord Stafford as the heir general thereof. (2) that cr. 1547 became exti net about 1640 on failure (by the death of Roger, Baron Stafford) of the issue male of the grantee. (3) that cr. in 1640 in favour of William Howard and his wife, Mary (bom Stafford) became forfeited, as to him, by his attainder in 1678, and as to her, on her death in 1691, in consequence of her s. and it. being the sou of an attainted father. On the repeal, however, in 1824 of this attainder, this Barony became vested in Sir G. W. Jeruing- ham, Bart., and so continues in his descendants.
