She d. 10 Uct. 1694, aged 27, and was bur. at Bisham, Berks. M.I. Admon. as of Langley Marsh, Bucks, 3 Dec. 1694. He </. a. p. at his residence on Englefield Green in Egham, co. Surrey, 4 and was bur. 18 Dec. 1739, at Binfield afsd. Will dat. 23 Feb. 1738/9, pr. 15 Dec. 'l 739, ( c ) by his sister Lady Judith Trumbull, widow, and his nephew, Robert Lee "Est). By his death the issue mule of the 1st Earl appears to have expired aud the peerage became dormant. The title was, however, assumed 20 years later ou the ground of the then claimant being, according to the descent hereunder, heir male collateral. VI. 1739. G. William Alexander, slated to he cousin and h. male, as being only s. and h. of William Alexander, 1st s. and h. of David A. "in Mnthil,' 2d a. of Alexander A. " in Milluab," s. of John A. " in Gogar," 2d s. of Andrew A., of Menstrie. which Andrew was father of Alexander A., the father of the first Earl. This William, however, never claimed nor used the title of Earl of Stirling, but d. s.p. 1747. VII. 1747. 7. James Alexander, great uncle and h. male of the above, being 2d s. of David A. afsd. He was Surveyor Gen. of the province of New Jersey in America in 1714 and one of the Council of that pro- vince and of New York. He, likewise, neither claimed nor used the title of Earl of Stirling. He m. Mary, da. of John Sl'ROTT, of co. Wigton. He d. 1756. VIII. 1756, S. William Alexander, only s. and h., b. about to 1736 ; was (like his father) Surveyor Gen. and one of the 1793. Council of New Jersey. He arrived in England in 1757, and having been, 20 March 1759, served heir male to Henry, Earl of Stirling (who d. in 1739), assumed the style of Earl of Stirling, &c. [S.j His petition was remitted to the House of Lords, 2 May 1760, who resolved 10 March 1762, that he had no right to that title till he had " made out his claim." He subsequently became Major Gen. in the American army, and, as such, was taken prisoner by Gen. Howe on Long Island, Aug. 1776. He was finally Com. in Chief of the Americau forces in the northern department. He (") He iB thus called (in lieu of "Viscount Canada") in his father's will, as also iu the Lords' Journal, 20 May 1690, for granting an annuity to his wife. ( b ) She is called therein " Elizabeth Hoby, widow." Her parentage, however, as "hove, is set forth in her M.I. (°) In it he directs his wife's " red velvet embroydered slippers " to be placed in his coffin. He directs his burial to be at Binfieid, " near my aunt Jaue and my William," but does not specify where his wife was buried.
