[S.J, by whom he was knii/tUtl. and whom he effectually supported in the so-called " conspiracy " of the Karl of Gowrie 5 Aug. 1600, obtaining accordingly the Barony of ittithveu and the abbey lands of Scone, of which that Earl had been commendator. These lands were erected into a temporal Lordship, with a seat and vote in Pari. [S.] ami he was invested therein, 7 April 160"', becoming thereby LOliD SCONE [8J. By charter 18 Aug. 1608 the rem. thereof was extended, failing heirs male of his body, to (1) [his nephew] Andrew Murray, of Balvaird in like manner, and by charter, ratified under the Great Seal 14 (Jet. 161(3, the rem. was still further extended in favour of (2) Sir Mungo Murray, of Drumcairne ; (3) Sir John Murray, of Lochmaben ; (4) Gilbert Murray, 1st s. of David M., of Balgouy ; (5) Andrew Murray. 2d s. of the said David j and (6) William Murray, s. of Sir Mungo M., of Cleremonth,(a) in like manner, with a final rem. to his own heirs male whatsoever, bearing the name and arms of Murray of Rdvaird. He was on the assize for the trial of the Earl of Orkuey in 1615. and exerted himself strenuously in carrying the articles of Perth in 1621 (to introduce Episcopacy into Scotland) being in "reward nr., 16 Aug. 1621, VISCOUNT UK STORMONT [SJ0) with the same limitations as those of the Barony of Scone. He was, 20 July 1625, served heir male and of entail to his nephew, Sir Andrew Murray, abovenamed, becoming thus the head of the house of Murray of Balvaird. He M. Elizabeth, da. of David Betoun or Beaton, of Criech, co. Fife. He d. s.p. at Scone, 27 Aug., and was bur. there, 23 Sep. 1631. M.l. Funeral entry in Lyon office. HU widow d. 21 Jan. 1658. II. 1631. 2. Mungo (Murray), Viscount Stormont, and Lord Scone [S. ], 3d cousin (once removed) and heir according to the spec. rem. above recited in which he stood second. He was 1th s. of John (Murray), 1st Earl of Tullibardine [S.] by Catharine, da. of David (Drummond 4th Lord Drummond [S.] He was of Drumcairne and was knighted before Oct. 1616, and sue. to the peerage, [S ] as above, 23 Sep. 1631. He tit. firstly Anne, niece of the late Viscount, 1st da. of his eldest br., Sir Andrew Murray, of Arngosk and Balvaird, by Margaret, da. of John Crichton, of Strathurd. She d. s.p. 13 and was bur. 23 May 1639 at Scone. He m. secondly, in 1639, Anne, widow of Alexander Lindsay, of Edzell, 2d da. of John (Wemyss), 1st Earl of We.uyss [S.], by Jean, da. of Patrick (Gray), Lord Gray [&j He d. s.p. March 1642. IIL 1642. 3. James (Murray), Earl of Annandale, Vmcoust Stormont, &c. [S.], possibly a distant cousin, ('•) but heir according to the spec. rem. above recited, being s. and h. of John, 1st Earl OF Annandale [S.] (s° cr. 13 March 1624/5), who was the "Sir John Murray, of Lochmaben," that stood third in the spec. rem. relating to the titles of Stormont and Scone above mentioned. ( a ) The relationship of the Murrays of Cleremonth to the grantee is not clear. ( b ) Stormont is a district in Perthshire.
