Hooke ( Correspondence," vol. ii, p. 389). "Milord Stormont passe quarante ans, il est riche et puissant; il euteud les aflaires ; il est fort determine, et d'uue giande probitc ; il a line presence d'esprit peu commune." (•') In Wood's " Douglas" she is called " Nicholas Grierson, only da. procreated of the marriage between Sir John Grierson, of Lagg, Hart., and Janet Murray, the eldest of the three daughters and heirs portioners of Sir James Murray, of Cockpool (elder br. of John, Earl of Aunandale) and heirs of line of the Murrays, Earls of Annandale, now represented by the Earl of Mansfield." On this, M.J. Shaw-Ste<vart remarks, "What Douglas says of Janet Murray and the Griersons is incorrect ; lier name was Margaret and she m. (not Sir John Grierson, but his father) Sir Hubert Grierson." (°) Of his three yr. brothers, (1) John, d. young, (2) James Murray, was titular Earl of Dunbar, and (3) William Murray was the famous Earl of Mansfield, so cr. 1776. ( d ) Tho' this ancient family undoubtedly resided in very early times at. Stourton (in which parish are the 6 springs which are represented in their coat of arms, being those which form the source of the river Stour), there are no records to shew that they were Landowners till the reign of Ed. L, when Nicholas Stourton held one knight's fee here, under the Lovells of Castle Gary, co. Somerset. The manor of Stourton, which in the 1 1th century was held by the family of Fitzpayne, was, however, acquired before 1127 by that of Stourton, and held by them some 300 years till its Bale by the 13th Baron. Top et Gen." vol, i, p. 312 is an interesting pedigree shewing tie connection of the Stourton family with the " blood royal," temp. Heu. Vll.
