Gen. William Drumtnotul " (in the baptism at Edinburgh of his son David) ami (ibid. p. 690) as late as 10 Aug. 10S0, as "Hon. General William Drunimond" (in his creation as Viscount), while " Riddrll " (p. 712, note 0) says that it was iu the time of his son, the 2d Viscount, that, "the Barony of Maderty came eventually to merge." It would seem, however, that some such resignation (whether a valid one or otherwise) took place in 1684, iu order "to save expenses. H [Lauder's " Hist. ( c ) He appears to have been "a loose and profane man," ambitious and covetous, " but with sufficient sense of honour to restrain him from public apostaey for the sake of profit, being, indeed, a bad Christian but a good Protestant." He had (according to Bishop Unmet) "a great measure of knowledge and learning," and rW the compiler, iu 1081, of a history of his family, of which, 100 copies (ed. by C K. Sharpe), were privately printed iu 1831. [See " Nat. Bioyr."] ( d ) It is doubtful, however, whether he may not have succeeded his unci* (and net his father) in the Barony of Maderty at a later date than 1088. See note "a" above. (o) The estates, of Cromlix, InnerpefFray, &c., devolved on the family of Hay, as heirs of line, in right of descent from Klizabeth, wife of Thomas, Karl of Kiiiuoull [S-] the only da. of the 1st Viscount. ( f ) The 5th s., Andrew Drummond, b. 10SO, settled in London, soon after the Union [S.], ami was much entrusted with the affairs of the Jacobites. He was founder of the well known bank of " Drumtnonds," at Charing Cross, uud d. '2 Feb. 1709, iu his 82d year, being bur. at Staumore, co. Midx., leaving issue.
