VI., he was beheaded '23 b'eb, 1553/1, when, having been attainted, alt hit honour* became /ur/citwf| the Dukedom of Suffolk, as he d. s.p.m., becoming also extinct. (•') The pmtraits of these two brothers, by Holbein, are engraved by Bartolocn, that of Henry being also given iu "l>o,/ti: They appear to have been wonderfully proficient in learning. Tie ir lives were written by their tutor, Thomas Wilson, afterwards Sec. of State, their fate having created .1 deep impression on Society. Wilson calls the elder brother " uuimosus, fortis, robustus et ad militarem disciplinatu lion faetus sed natus, ' and the younger one " lion robustus sed elegans." (°) Having no brother or sister of the wkoU blood, and his father's brother and sister, William and Anne (who were living 1496;, having d. s.p. (probably when but children) the estates, according to the law of that period, devolved on the descendants of the numerous daughters of his great grandfather, Sir William Brandon, the aunts of t" e 1st Duke. Seep. 308, note "e." There were, however, 1 sisters of the 'hi'/ bleiiil, viz., 2 by Anne Browne and 2 by the Princess Mary. As to the former, (1) Anne, m. firstly Edward (Grey Lord Urey de l'owis (who d. s.p. legit. 2 July 1551), and secondly Handle Hauworth, and d s.p. Jan. 1557/8. (2) Mary, in. Thomas (Stanley), Lord Monteagle, and d. between 1540 and 1547, leaving issue. As to the latter sisters their royal descent makes them well known, their descendants being, under the act for the Protestant succession, next in retention to the throne of England, failing the line of .Brunswick " [" deneulogitt," 1st S., vol. ii.. p. 268]. These two were (1) I 1 ranees, who m., firstly, Henry (Orey), Marquess of Dorset ami Duke of Suffolk (by whom she was mother of Jane, sometime Queen of England), and, secondly, Adrian Stokes ; and (2) Eleanor, ni. Henry (Clifford), 2d Eurl o£ Cumberland.
