( b ) A letter of 4 Jan. 1610/1 says it is certain that the Lord Walden's marriage shall be at Candlemas. ( c ) It seems that he contemplated another marriage, for a letter to Sir J. Fuckeriutr, Bart., from Mr. E. li. says that " The Earl of Suffolk is shortly to be married to the Lady Leigh, Sir Heury Leigh's widow of Oxfordshire. This lady is daughter of the old Countess of Devonshire. I see the Earl at Court crawling up and down ; and mj opinion is that a good candle would be better for his weak body than a lusty widow as she is." lie is spoken of, 14 April 1635, by G. Garrard [Stafford Letters I, 412] as Lame still and ever like to be." ( J ) On 20 Sep. 1663, the degree of M.A. was conferred on James (Howard), 3d Earl of Suffolk ; John (Granville), 1st Earl of Bath ; John (Middleton), 1st Earl of Middletou [S.] J Henry (Hamilton), 2d Earl of Clanbrassill [1 ] ; Henry Somerset, styled Lord Herbert, afterwards (1682) 1st Duke of Beaufort ; Charles (Berkeley), 1st Viscount Fitzhardinge of Berehaven [I.] ; William Cavendish, styled Lord Cavendish, afterwards (1694) 1st Duke of Devonshire, aud the Hon. Charles' Berkeley, afterwards (1698) 2d Karl Berkeley. ( a ) This is the age on her coffin plate (see p. 311, note "e") and is a very probable one, making her 13 at her marriage. Dorothy, "da. of Sir Henry Rich, Ent. a bap. at Kensington, 27 Sep. 1616 [sin.], and bur. there, 28 Dec. 1615 [He}, Wo* presumably (on the supposition that the dates are confused) one and the same persou. If, however, the baptism of 1616 applies to the Couutess of Suffolk, she would have been 33 years old at her death aud some 3 y ears older than her husband.
