Charles Greville calls him {Memoirs) "a leviathan of wealth." The collection of pictures he inherited from the Duke of Bridgewater called " the Stafford Gallery " and sometimes " the Bridgewater Gallery, was perhaps, unrivalled, anil he was among the first of such owners, who allowed a London public access thereto. ( b ) The title chosen (on a suggestion, it was said, of the Princess Augusta) was very objectionable, being that of a Dukedom of Sutherland heritable in tail male, which at any devolution may become separate from the Earldom of Sutherland, a dignity heritable by heirs of line. ( c ) He was a Liberal, supporting the Catholic emancipation and the Reform Bill, but his ill health hindered any political success. His portrait "after W. Owen, 1811," is engraved in " Doyle" : other portraits of him exist, by Romney and Phillips, also two colossal statues by Chantrey, one at Dvtnvobtn and the other at Trentham. f d ) His yr. and only surv. br. Francis, inherited, on his father's death in 1833, the Egerton estates, pictures, &c. under the will of bis grfat uncle, the Duke of Bridge- water, took the name of Egerton, and was cr. in 1846, Earl of Ellesmere. (°) " He had previously been debarred from matrimony by a romantic attachment to Louise, the unfortunate Queen of Prussia, but the union with Lady Harriett Howard proTed one of affection." [Nat.
