Sir Peter Carew. C) He had considerable antiquarian taste ; was the friend of Camden. Cotton and Bodley. " In Irish history Carew took a vivid interest. His papers inspired the detailed account of the Irish revolt [1599-1002]. which was pub. after his death in 1033 under the title of Ihbcrnia I'aatta. The virtual author of this book, which has often been ascribed to Carew himself', is undoubtedly Sir Thomas Stafford reputed to be Carew's illegit. son, who had served under Carew in Minister." [Xnt. Biogr.] Carew's voluminous and valuable MSS. are in various places, vis, the Lambeth Library, the Bodleian. Hatfield, &c. Queen Elizabeth, when appointing him Pres. of Munster. 20 Jan. 1599, speaks of him as " one whom we know, besides his faithful and diligent endeavours in former service, to be well acquainted with the estate of our Realm .mil with the condition and nature of that province," and he was equally appreciated (and much better rewarded) by her two successors. Weldon ("James J") calls Sir W. Raleigh, Sir Geo. Carew and the Lord Grey "very able men as the world had." His portrait " after G. Geldorp," is engraved in " Doyle," and is also prefixed to the " Pacala //iOernia."
