IV. 1764. 4- Robert (Hampdes, formerly Trevor), Baron Tkevor of Buomham, next br., tho' of the half blood, and h. male ; 4. 17 Feb. 1705/6, at St. Clement Danea ; took the name of Hampden in lieu of that of Trevor, by royal lie. 22 Feb. 1754 ; sue. to the peerage 27 Dec. 1764 and was cr. 14 June 1776, VISCOUNT HAMPDEN. Robert Weldon of London, possibly this Robert, but more probably his father. ( b ) He began his career as a Whig, but was a Tory during most of the reign of Queen Anne (from whom, as such, he received his peerage) and consequently was ousted from the Common Pleas by Geo. I, but, reverting to his ancient politics, obtained office again some years later. Lord Hervey speaks of him and Lord Harcourt as (lawyer-like) looking " on Princes, like other clients " and as maintaining " whoever fees them last and pays them best." Lord Cowper Bpeaks of him as " an able man," but hints (1714) to Geo. I that it may "be thought fit to remove hint from office." (°) Elizabeth, his only da. and h , was Duchess of Marlborough.
