(a) "The younger da. of rich Bennet " [Sir C. Lyttelton to Viscount Hatton, 14 July 1683] "the da. (about 13 years old) of great Bennett" [Luttrell's "Diary" 13 July 1683]. The "great Bennett " had died the year before, 20 Aug. 1682, aged 60, being nephew and heir of Sir Simon Bennet, Bart, (so cr. 1627) of Beachampton afsd., the eldest surv. b. and h. of Sir Thomas Bennet, Lord Mayor of London, 1603-04. As to the young Lady's mother, Luttrell tells us [Diary 20 Sep. 1694.] " Yesterday Mrs. Bennet, mother to the Countess of Salisbury, was murdered by a butcher, who broke into her home." ( b ) She has been painted by Kneller. (<•) His mother was " brought to bed of a son, having been several years without a child," [Luttrell's "Diary" 8 June 1691]. (d) George Ticknor (Life, &c, I, p. 268), writes of him in 1S19 as being " 70 years old, but well preserved and a specimen of the gentlemau of the last generation, with easy elegant manners and a proud graceful courtesy."
