GoDARD (») van Reede (") s. and h. of Godard J /- Adriaan van R., ist Baron van Reede (") [in Denmark, " ' so cr. 25 May 1671] Lord of Amerongen, Middachten, Lievendaal, Ginkel, Gfc., in the United Provinces, several times Ambassador to England and Denmark (who d. 1691), by his wife Brilliana (or Margaret), da. of George Turnor, by his wife Salomd van Meetkercken. He was i. 4 June 1644 (O.S.) at Amerongen Castle, in Utrecht, his family belonging to the old feudal nobility of that province. He was made Lieut. Gen. of Cavalry in the United Provinces 20 Oct. 1683, and was appointed, by William III, Lieut. Gen. and Commander in Chief of the army in Ireland. Having distinguished himself by the capture of Athlone, 20 June 1 691, and at the battle of Aughrim on 10 July following, he was naturalised as ' Baron de Ginkel ' by Act of Pari. 24 Feb. 169 1/2, and was cr. (^) 4 Mar. 169 1/2, BARON OF AGHRIM, co. Galway, and EARL OF ATHLONE, (") CO. Roscommon [I]. On 13 Oct. 1693 the King granted him the forfeited estates (26,481 acres) (') of William Dongan, the attainted Earl of Limerick [I.], but this grant was reversed by Pari, on 15 Dec. 1699. Commander in Chief of the allied armies in Flanders, and, in 1702, was Veldt-Marshal of the armies of the States Gen. He m.,(cort. 31 July), 26 Aug. 1666, at EUekom, in Gelderland, Urselina Philopota, da. of Reinier van Raesveld, Lord of Middachten, by Margaretha van Leefdael, his wife. He d. 1 1 Feb. 1 702/3, of apoplexy, at Utrecht, and was I?ur. at Amerongen. His widow d. 30 Sep. 1721, at Middachten Castle, and was also iur. at Amerongen. Their mutual testament dat. 11 Apr. 1701. II. 1703. 2. Frederik Christiaan (van Reede), Earl of Ath- lone, i^c., [I.], s. and h., h. 20 Oct. 1668, at Utrecht. He was a member of the Nobles in that province. Naturalised in England 1 696. Lieut. Gen. of the Dutch Forces, and Governor of Sluys.
