James, 9th Earl), only da. of Archibald, 5th Earl of Douglas, [S.] by Eupheme Graham, da. of Eupheme, J«(? _;«r^ Countess of Strathern [S.]. She, who was called " the fair maid of Galloway, " was h. to her br. William, 6th Earl of Douglas [S.], who d. s.p., 24 Nov. 1440. On this marriage the King bestowed on them the Lordship of Balveny (") (one of the forfeited possessions of the family of Douglas) and other large estates. She was living 21 Jan. 1472/3, but d. in or before 1475. He m., 2ndly, before 19 Apr. 1475, Eleanor, da. of William (Sinclair), Earl of Orkney and Caithness [S.], by his 2nd wife, Marjory, da. of Alexander Suther- land, of Dunbeath. By her he had eleven children. He </. 15 Sep. 15 12, at the Laighwood, and was bur. in Dunkeld Cathedral. His widow d. 21 Mar. 1 51 8, and was bur. with him. XXI. 1 5 12. 2. John (Stewart), Earl of Atholl [S.], s. and h. by 2nd wife. He m. Janet, 3rd da. of Archibald (Camp- bell), 2nd Earl of Argyll [S.], by Elizabeth, ist da. of John (Stewart), 1st Earl of Lennox [S.]. He is usually said to have been slain 9 Sep. 1 5 1 3, at the battle of Flodden, but he did not die till 1 52 1 . His widow d. about 2 Feb. i^4.^j6. XXII. 1 52 1. 3. John (Stewart), Earl of Atholl [S.], only s. and h., b. 6 Oct. 1507 ; enfeoffed 3 May 1522. He was celebrated for his magnificent hospitality. In 1529 he entertained James V, the Pope's nuncio, fffc. He m., istly, before Oct. 1533, Grizel, da. of Sir John R.ttray, of that ilk, which lady was living 1537. He m., 2ndly, less than 6 months before his death, Jean, yst. da. of John (Forbes), 6th Lord Forbes [S.], by his 3rd wife, Elizabeth Barlow, widow of Alexander, 1st Lord Elphinstone [S.]. He d. 1542, about Nov., aged 35. His widow m., after 17 Nov. 1545, Alexander Hay, of Dalgety, and 3rdly, before 17 Jan. 1549/50, as his ist wife, William Leslie, of Balquhain. She had a charter (wherein she is called "J oner Forbes, Countess of Atholl"), dat. 9 Jan. 1546/7, of part of Balquhain. (') On this occasion it is reported that his nephew. King James III, said to him — " Furth fortune and fill the fetters, " the motto assumed by the succeeding Earls of Atholl. C") Though the Castle of Balveny came to the Earl by his ist wife, he did not leave it to her issue (two daughters) by him (she had none by her former husbands), but to his own s. and h. by his second wife. It was sold in 1610 (soon after the death of the 5th Earl in 1595, s.p.m.) to John (Abernethy), 8th Lord Saltoun [S.], whose issue became /?x-<(«i.Y in 1669. In 1687 Alexander Duff, of Braco, agent to Arthur Forbes, got possession of it, and succeeded, after many law suits (all of which were settled in 1743), in retaining it. 41
