[S.] to William III, he was re-appointed on the accession of Anne, and was made Lord Privy Seal [S.] in Apr. 1703, a month before he sue. to his father's honours. On 30 June 1703 (a month after succeeding to the Marquessate, fffc), he was cr. DUKE OF ATHOLE, MARQUESS OF TILLIBARDIN, EARL OF STRATHTAY AND STRATHARDLE, VISCOUNT OF BALWHIDDER, GLENALMOND AND GLENLYON, AND LORD MURRAY, BALVENIE, AND GASK, (") all in the co. of Perth [S.], with a spec, rem., failing the heirs male of his own body to those of his father. K.T. 7 Feb. 1703/4. In 1705 he resigned his office of Privy Seal, and warmly opposed the Union of Scotland with England. Having joined the Tory part)', he was elected a Rep. Peer [S.] in 17 10 and (again) 1713 ; Lord High Commissioner to the Gen. Assembly of the Church of Scotland 1712 to 1714; an extraordinary Lord of Session 7 Nov. 1712 till death. P.C. She, who was bap. at Hamilton, 24 Oct. 1662, d. and was bur. there 17 Jan. 1707. Fun. entry at Lyon office. He m., 2ndly, (cont. dat. 26 June 1710) in 1710, Mary, 2nd da. of William (Ross), Lord Ross [S.], by Agnes, da. and h. of Sir John Wilkie. He d. at Huntingtower, co. Perth, in his 65th year, 14, and was bur. 26 Nov. 1724, C") at Dunkeld. Fun. entry at Lyon office. On his death the titles conferred on him in 1696, being for life, became extinct. His widow, who was b. 18 July 1687, d. 17 Jan. 1767, at Huntingtower, having survived him 42 years, and was bur. with him. [John Murray, styled Marquess of Tullibardine, ist s. and h. ap. by 1st wife, b. 6 May 1684, at Kinneil, was, on 22 Jan. 1706, a student at the Univ. of Leyden. He was Col. of a regiment in the service of the States of Holland. He served at Oudenarde, 30 June/ii July 1708, and at Malplaquet, 31 Aug./ 11 Sep. 1709, where he was killed, v. p., aged 24, and was bur. at Brussels.] [William Murray, styled Marquess of Tullibardine, 2nd, but ist surv., s. and h. ap. by ist wife, b. 14 Apr. 1689, at Edinburgh, matric. at St. Andrew's 25 Jan. 1706, ent. the Navy 1707.
