(") The grounds for the supposition that he m. a lady of unknown name, before Ela, which lady was mother of his 4 elder sons, a supposition which G.E.C., following Beltz, entertained, are that it would have been illegal for Ela to have enfeoffed his 5th s. Hugh in her manor of Stratton, which she did immediately after her husband's death, unless Hugh had been her eldest s. However it is clear that she did act in the way which Beltz regarded as illegal, and the apocryphal anonymous ist wife may be disregarded, for the date of James' marriage to Ela is now known, and various Audley Inqi. show that none of his sons were h. before 1249.
