He, being of Barham Court, and Teston, Kent, was cr. a Baronet on 23 Oct. 1781 (with a spec. rem., (**) failing his issue male, to his s.-in-law, Gerard Noel Edwardes) ; M.P. (Tory) for Rochester 1784-90; Rear Adm. 1787 ; Vice Adm. 1793 ; a Lord of the Admiralty 1794-95 ; Adm. of the Blue 1795 ; First com- missioner for revising the civil affairs of the navy ; and ist Lord of the Admiralty C^) 30 Apr. 1805-06. C") The Lords of Session [S.] in their return, 1740, report that as they cannot discover from the records the limitation of the dignity " they cannot take upon them to say whether it is extinct or not." (See Robertson, p. 213.) The Peerage must have been a male fief, as the succession of the 3rd Lord, the h. male was allowed, instead of that of the h. gen. And even supposing the patent to have been to heirs male whom- soever, these, the grantee being illegitimate, would have ended with the heirs male oj his body.
