APPENDIX J o GRANT OF THE COMTE OF AUMALE TO RICHARD, EARL OF WARWICK In the Chambre des Comptes at Paris there was formerly a volume entitled: — " Cest le Livre et Registre des Chartes et Lettres patentes du Roy nostre souverain Seigneur des dons par luy faits de plusieurs fiefs terres rentes et seigneuries commenceantes a Pasques i42o() lunziesme jour davril apres Pasques." This Register is not now in the Archives Nationales, and has doubt- less perished. But in the unarranged mass of Preuves collected by Gilles Andre de la Roque in his Histoire de la Maison de Harcourt, ten docu- ments are reproduced (pp. 1439-73) therefrom. Of these some have been also entered on the Norman Rolls, some not. Among the latter is the following: — Henricus Dei gracia Rex Francie et Anglie et Dominus Hibernie omnibus ad quos presentes littere pervenerint salutem Sciatis quod inter cetera quibus nostra sollicitudo residet et versatur votis nostris occurrit precipuum universa loca dominacioni nostre subdita et subjecta et eorum incolas in pace et tranquillitate firmare eaque nobilibus et potentibus fulcire et ornare et eorum amplis consiliis et favoribus contra hostiles invasiones et incursus protecta et munita sub pacis et quietis dulcedine securius perse- verent et certe potissime ducatum nostrum Normannie quem sanitate operante multiformi gracia Salvatoris sumus undique conquesti hinc est quod nos ad preclarissimum consanguineum nostrum Ricardum Comitem Warre- wic' mentis nostre aciem intime dirigentes actusque suos virtuosos eciam preclara et laudabilia merita quibuscum virtutis donis nobiliter insignitur nutu ponderantes de gracia nostra speciali dedimus et concessimus eidem (^) Contributed by G. W. Watson. C") So described, but several of the documents mentioned above are of earlier date. There is no doubt about the date of the one here given, for Henry V was certainly at Vernon on 19 May 14 19. La Roque has made a few blunders in his transcript and extensions: — omnia for onera, facere imprimum (or faciant imperpetuum, etc.; ituffura he gave up as hopeless.
