A reference to the original shows that Doyle has both misunderstood and misdated it; it is correctly calendared at its true date, 26 Mar. 1554, and does not record any ap- pointment to the office of Lord Privy Seal. Bedford, the then holder, was starting on a mission to Spain at that time, and is described as " Lord Privy Seal " both during his brief absence and after his return. Winchester, as Lord Treasurer, appears to have been in natural charge of the Seal during Bedford's temporary absence, [ex inform. the Rev. A. B. Beaven). 80
