V.G. {^) He was author of several astronomical works, a yachtsman taking long voyages to out-of-the-way places for scientific objects, and carrying with him a trained ornithologist. Owner of a magnificent library which was housed at Haigh Hall, he was also a collector of stamps, and in his early years an enthusiastic Freemason. He was also a director of public companies.
