PREFATORY NOTE
The present series of the English Reports consists of the decisions in appeals to the House of Lords comprised in the reports of Shower (P.C., 3rd edition, 1740), Colles, Brown (P.C., 2nd edition by Tomlins, 1803), Dow (P.C.), Bligh, Bligh (New Series), Dow and Clark, Clark and Finnelly, Maclean and Robinson, West, and the House of Lords Cases (Clark). The cases are reprinted verbatim, with the original footnotes. Notes in square brackets have been inserted above the head-note to each case which lent itself to such annotation, giving references to the columns in Mews' Digest of English Case Law where it is dealt with, and also to any subsequent decisions, that have seemed to be typical, in which it was expressly considered, followed, or distinguished. Where a decision has been expressly affected by subsequent legislation, the fact has also been mentioned. The numbers in black type in the text indicate the paging in the original Reports. The cases reported in each volume are indexed in the Table of Cases, under the names of both appellants and respondents, with references to the pages of the original Reports and of the English Reports respectively where they are to be found.
