natives spoke. He used to sit in the verandah,[1] between his bearer's knees, and chew paun,[2] and eat bazar[3] sweetmeats. He wore no shoes or stockings; but was dressed in pangammahs[4] and had silver bangles[5] on his ancles. No one could have told by his behaviour or manner of speaking that he was not a native, but his pretty light hair and blue eyes at once shewed his parentage.

  5. Ornaments, generally worn round the wrists and ancles.
