Katari, Raja of; Partab Bahadur Singh; b. 1874; succeeded to title, 1886; belongs to the Kanpeveia clan which is the younger branch of the Tiloi family; chosen by the Rani Harnath Kunwar, widow of Sarnam Singh, as her successor to the Estate; the estate comprises 13 villages in Sultanpur with an annual revenue of Rs. 12,770; title of Raja confirmed as hereditary, 1864. Kelkar, Narasimha Chintaman, B.A., LL.B., Editor, the “Maharatta”, Poona; s. of Mr. C. L. Kelkar; b. Modimbe, Sholapur district, 1872; educ: Miraja High School, and Rajaram and Deccan Colleges, Poona; practiced as a pleader in Satara till 1896; became Editor of the “Maharatta”, 1897; was Editor of the “Kesari”, 1897-98; severed connection with the latter, and again took it up, January 1910. Publications: History of Ireland; Life of Garibaldi; Essay on Wit and Humour, (all in Marathi); also 5 dramas, i.e., the Pretender; Chendragupta; Quarrel between Krishna and Arjuna; Amatya Madhar; and Sant Bhanudas. Kirwan, L. E., Assistant Editor, “Madras Mail”, Madras; s. of Rev. Richard Kirwan; b. Gittisham Rectory, 1869; educ: Bath College, and the Forest School, Wathamston; came out to India and was coffee planter, 1889 1901; served in South Africa with Lumsden’s Horse, 1900; wounded at Zand River, 1901; awarded Queen’s medal with 3 clasps; joined the staff of the ‘Madras Mail’ as Assistant Editor, 1901; Honorary Secretary, Agri-Horticultural Society, Madras, 1903-09; and again in 1913-14; m. Krishnaswami Iyengar, S., M.A., M.R.A.S., F.R.H.S., University Professor of Indian History and Archaeology, Madras; b. Sakkotai near Kumbakonam, Tanjore District, 1871; completed his early education in his village; removed to Bangalore and joined the St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore; joined the Central College, Bangalore; passed B.A., with Physics as his optional subject, 1893; joined service in the Education department of Mysore, 1893; passed M.A., 1900; turned his attention to research work; elected, M.R.A.S., on the motion of the late Mr. Romesh Chander Dutt; elected F.R.H.S. on the motion of Professor Rhys Davids and H.H. the late Valia Koil Tampuran of Travancore; delivered his 1st lecture at Madras under the auspices of the South Indian Association, 1904; nominated as a Member of the Board of Studies in History and Economics; became Member of the Board of Examiners in History and Economics; reverted to Central College,
