indeed, but cool and contemplative, moves us but little ; Geiger's telling words compel us to attend, and seem to clothe our thoughts with form and colour. They are in the deepest and best sense of the word modern, and for this very reason doubly effective. They are at the same time so true and universal, that although written with reference to the investigation of entirely different subjects, they are none the less wholly applicable to the abstract region of inquiry which lies before us.
