FORSAMEIKLE as in tyme bygane , the onely meane for quyeting of die Borders was entering of pledges, and the keeping of them in Surety that in cafe any enormitic or wrang were committed by any of the gang or furname , for the whiik they were entered pledges ; then Juftice fliould be execute againft the faids pledges with all rigour. And becaufe heretofore, ane great number of the Nobilitie and Barronnes , being burdened tor keeping in furetie fome of the faids pledges , hath made their excufe of the danger and inconve- nient that might occurr to them, in cafe of the efcape of any of the faids pledges, dely vered to them in keeping; whilk being eafie to be prevented be the mair imprifonment of them.
