PLATE XXXI

Hektor Taking Leave of Andromache

Owing to its lack of feeling this scene is an inadequate illustration of the famous episode in the sixth book of the Iliad. The central figures are, of course, Hektor and Andromache. Behind the former his driver Kebriones is mounted on one of the two chariot horses, while behind the latter stand Paris and Helen. The figures approaching from the sides are not named. From a Chalkidian krater of about 550 b.c., in Würzburg (Furtwängler-Reichhold, Griechische Vasenmalerei, No. 101). See p. 120.
