SIE WILLIAM CXINNIXGHAME, of Kilmaurs (descended from Wamebaldus de Cunningham, having obtained that manor by grant from Hugh Moreville, constable of Scot- land, who d. 1167), had a charter of the Earldom of Carrick from David II. He m. 2ndly, Eleanor Bruce, Countess of Carrick, only child of Alexander, 8th Earl of Carrick (and co- heir of her uncle Thomas, 9th Earl) . and was created EAliL OP Carrick, j.u. ; she d. s. p. and the title reverted to the Cro'(Ti. By his 1st wife the Earl of Carrick had 2 sons, [1] Sir William, of Kilmam-s (2nd sou), had a share of the 40,000 francs sent by the King of Frauce to be distributed among the principal persons in Scotland ISS.'), founded the collegiate chnrch of Kilmaurs by charter 13 Mar. 1403, had the lands and baronies of Danielstou and Finlayston, co. Renfrew, Kilmarnock, Dumbartons. Gleucairn, co. Dumfi-ies, and Red- hall and Collingtou in Edinburghshire, in right of his wife Margaret, elder dau. and coheir of Sir Robert de Dauyelston (or Dennistoun) ; he d. 1418, having had 3 sons. His grandson, ALEXANDER (son of Sir Robert Cuningbam, Knt.), created a lord of parliament as Lord Kihnam-s about 1450, created Earl of Glencaim 28 May, 1488, by JAMES III. fell at Bannock- burn 11 June following ; m. Margaret, dau. of Adam Hep- bum, Lord of Hales, and had 2 sons. (1) Robert. Lord Kilmaurs, "2nd Earl of Glencaim," de- prived of the Earldom Oct. 1488, by JAMES IV. who by proclamation issued at Scone 6 Oct. 1488, and ratiBed in parliament, enacted that all creations of new dignities granted since 2 Feb preceding (1487/8) by the deceased King were annulled; m. before 19 Oct. 1476, Christian, eldest dau. of John, Lord Lindsay, of The Byres, relict of John, Master of Seton, and had a son, William, Lord Kilmaurs, 3rd Earl of Glencaim. to whom and to his son WiUiam and his heirs the Earldom was restored by charter 24 July, 1511 ; wounded at the battle of Linlithgow, 4 Sept. 1526, fighting for J.AMES V. ; d. before 18 Dec. 1544, having m. Lady Marjory Douglas, eldest dau. of Archibald, 5th Earl of Angus, and had a son. Sir William, 4th Earl of Glencaim, had a charter of his lands 6 June, 1498, 1509, &c. high treasurer of Scotland 1526, taken prisoner at the rout of Solway 1542, ransomed for £1,000 ; d. 1547, having m. 1st, Catherine, 2nd dau. of William, 3rd Lord Borthwick ; she d. s. p. He m. 2ndly — Margaret or Elizabeth, dau. and heir of John Campbell, of West Loudoun, and had 5 sons and a dau. /I/ Alexander, 5th Earl, a zealous supporter of John Kno.x, had a principal command in the army which was sent against Q. M.VRT, June, 1567. His line ended on the death of John, 15th Earl, 24 Sept. 1796. /2/ Andrew, of CorsehiU, 1532, 1537, 1538, great-gi'eat- grandfather of Sir Alexander, created a Baronet. /3/ Hugh, ancestor of Cunningham of Carliug. /4/ Robert, minister of the Priory of Fell, in Ayrsh. ancestor of Cunningham of Montgrenan. /5/ WiUiam, bishop of Argyll. /6/ Elizabeth, m. to Sir John Cimningham, of Capringtou. (2) William, of Craigends, ancestor of Sir David Cnnninghame, created a B.iR0XET 3 Feb. 1702. [2] Thomas, of Baidland, in Dairy, A}Tsh. 1385, whose son, Adaji, m. one of the daus. and coheirs of Sir Duncan Wal- lace, of Simdnmi, with whom he got the lands and barony of Caprington, and was ancestor of Sir John Cunningham, created a BARONET 19 Sept. 1669 (DICK-CUXYNGH.AM). SIR ALEXANDER CUNNINGHAME of Corshill, AjTsli. created a Baronet of Nova Scotia 20 Feb. 1672, with remainder to the heirs male of his body ; m. Mary, dau. of John Stewart, the younger, of Blackball (BART.) Their great- grandson, ALEXANDER MONTGOMERY-CUNINGHAME, o. v. p. Jan. 1770 (son of Sir David, 3rd Baronet, d. 4 July, 1770), capt. in the army, served in Flanders : m. Elizabeth, eldest dau. and eventual heir of Da-id (Laing) Montgomery, of Lainshaw, and on succeeding to the estate of Kirktonholm, Lanarks. he assumed, by virtue of a deed of entail the surname and arms of Montgomery, and had issue 3 sons, who became successive Baronets (of whom the eldest. Sir Walter, 4th Baronet, unsuccessfully claimed the Earldom of Glencaim as heir male, 14 Jidy, 1797). His grandson, SIR THOMAS MONTGOMERY CUNINGHAME, 8tll Baronet (on the death of his brother Sir Alexander, 1846) ; d. 30 Aug. 1870, having m. 1832, Charlotte, only child of Hugh Hutchison, Esq of Southfield, co. Renfrew, and had with other issue 2 sons and a dau. (1) Sir ■William James, 9th and present Baronet. (2) Jessie Augusta, m. 22 May, 1866, to Hon.
