On September 15, 1972, the President had a meeting with H. R. Haldeman and John Dean during which there was discussion of the fact that Watergate had been "kept
away from the White House," the President complimented
- Dean for the skillful manner with which Dean had "handled"
Watergate by keeping Dean's "fingers in the dike," and the President commented that “the worst may happen, but it may not; so you just try to button it up as well as you
can and hope for.the best."
