On August 15, 1973, the President said in a public statement

that "Notvonly was I unaware of any cover~up, but .

until March let, I was unaware that there was anything to

cover~up.“ On August 22, 1973, the President said in a

press conference that "when we met on Sept. 15 and again

throughout our discussions in the month of March, Mr. Dean insisted there was not -- and I used [gig] his words -- a 'scintilla of evidence' indicating that anyone on the White House staff was involved in the planning of,the Watergate break—in."

On August 15, 1973, the President said in a public

statement that on March 21, 1973, . for

"I was told . . the first time that the planning of the watergate went

beyond those who had been tried and convicted, and that at

7 least one, and possibly more, persons at the Re-Election

Committee were involved."
