§ 34. compensation to a libraiy for the loss of the right to receive gratuitous copies of books :
Provided that this compensation shall not be paid to a library in any year, unless the Treasury are satisfied that the compensation for the pre- vious year has been applied in the purchase of books for the use of and to be preserved in the library.
Under 54 Geo. III., there were in all eleven libraries which were entitled to a free copy of every published book. In 1836 an Act was passed which reduced the number to five, that is, those which at present enjoy the right, and as compensation to those which were deprived of the right, it was enacted that the Treasury might from time to time pay out of the Consolidated Fund an annual sum equal to the average annual value of the books re- ceived by each such library during the three years ending June 30, 1836. The bodies so entitled to compensation are Sion College, the four Universities of Scotland, and the King's Inns, Dublin. The object of this section is to pr&serve the right of these bodies to compensation.

" Literary work" includes maps, charts, plans, tables, and compilations ;
" Dramatic work" includes any piece for reci- tation, chore ogmphic work or entertain- ment in dumb show, the scenic arrangement or acting form of which is fixed in writing or otherwise, and any cinematograph pro- duction where the arrangement or acting form or the combination of incidents represented give the work an original character ;
"Artistic work" includes works of painting,
