giving knowledge which that self-control confers, but by many years of patient labour; a labour which is all the more arduous because it is silent, and both unrecognized and unappreciated by others; and he who would pursue this science successfully must learn to stand alone, and to toil unrewarded, as far as any outward emolument is concerned.

The natural scientist pursues, in acquiring his particular kind of knowledge, the following five orderly and sequential steps:

1. Observation. that is, he closely and persistently observes the facts of nature.
