Christians, and many still remain, thank God, even where there are no Christians. It might therefore be quite possible for people to be good Christians because true Christianity requires of them what they would have done without its teaching. Socrates would unquestionably have made a very good Christian.


How much in the world depends on appearances you can judge from the mere fact that coffee served in wine-glasses is a very miserable drink. If meat were cut with scissors, or bread (as I once actually saw) buttered with an old though perfectly clean razor—who would like it?


Saints in stone have done more in the world than living ones.
