CHAPTER XII.

BRITISH OAK.—CONTRACT SPECIFICATION.

The British Oak tree affords logs that meet the following specification for the navy contracts, viz.:—

Timber sided ; or if rough, that will side—


20.0 inches and upwards, the shortest length being 26 feet.
20½ inches to 19 inches, the shortest length being 24 feet
18½ inches to 17 inches, the shortest length being 20 feet
16½ inches to 15 inches, the shortest length being 16 feet
14½ inches to 13 inches, the shortest length being 14 feet
12½ inches to 11 inches, the shortest length being 12 feet
10½ inches to 9 inches, the shortest length being 10 feet

the quantities of each class or siding varying according to the requirements of the dockyards.

For the rough timber (Fig. 16, a and b ) it is generally agreed that the price is to be, for each log measuring—

250 cub. ft. and upwards, rough contents, ⅌ load of 50 cub. ft. £
249 cub. ft to 200 cub. ft. rough contents, ⅌ load of 50 cub. ft. £
199 cub. ft to 150 cub. ft rough contents, ⅌ load of 50 cub. ft. £
149 cub. ft to 100 cub. ft rough contents, ⅌ load of 50 cub. ft. £
99 cub. ft to 50 cub. ft rough contents, ⅌ load of 50 cub. ft. £
49 cub. ft to 25 cub. ft rough contents, ⅌ load of 50 cub. ft. £
  Under 25 cub ft. rough contents, ⅌ load of 50 cub. ft. £
