The first edition of this book had a profound effect on a large manufacturer of Bordeaux. It was decided to make a clean start. A noble conception of the aims of Industry, and those of Architecture, led this manufacturer to take a daring step. For the first time perhaps (as far as France is concerned), the pressing problems of Architecture, thanks to him, were solved in a modern spirit. Economy, sociology, æsthetics: a new solution, using new methods.
